I chose a native English speaking professor’s seminar class in the fall semester of my second year of college and have been writing a graduation thesis with him since my third year. The reason why I chose his class was that I thought writing the thesis through communicating with him in English would give me confidence. I had not taken a lot of classes taught by native English speaking professors because I felt I could not keep up with the class contents with my English ability and would lose credits. However, when I was encouraged by other professors and took classes with native English speaking professors, they were all very kind. One particular professor, who later became my thesis advisor, asked me, “What are you interested in?” “Can you enjoy writing about it?” He also asked me, “Is there any previous research?” and thought about the topic together. When I could not express what I wanted to say well in English, he tried his best to guess and asked me by saying, “Do you want to say this?” Through such communication, I am now writing about baseball which I like. In fact, the process of writing everything in English is very difficult. For example, translating Japanese terms into English takes a long time. In addition, because the class is held online, I do not have many opportunities to communicate with my classmates and I feel a little lonely. However, if I could complete my thesis in English, I would be proud of myself as a student who majored in English literature. Therefore, I am working hard every day. I am sure there are students who are worried about writing their theses in English because they think their English is not good enough although they are enrolled in the English literature department. It is true that writing a thesis in English is very challenging, but at the same time, you can feel a sense of accomplishment. If you choose to write your graduation thesis in English, don’t worry too much. Kind professors will guide you through the process.

　私は大学２年生の秋にネイティブの先生のゼミを選択し、3年生からその先生と共に卒業論文を執筆しています。ネイティブの先生のクラスを選んだ理由は、その先生と英語でコミュニケーションをとりながら卒業論文を執筆し、完成させることは自分の自信に繋がると思ったからです。私はこれまでネイティブの先生のクラスをあまり履修してきませんでした。それは自分の英語力では授業内容を聞き取れず、単位を落としてしまうと感じていたからです。しかし、他の先生方にすすめられ、ネイティブの先生のクラスを履修してみると、とても親切な先生ばかりでした。特にゼミの先生は卒業論文のタイトルを決めるために、「興味があることは何？」「それについてなら執筆を楽しめる？」「先行研究はあるの？」など話を聞いてくださり、また一緒に考えてくださいました。言いたいことを英語でうまく言えなくても、「こういう事？」と私の言いたいことを一生懸命考え、そして表現してくださいました。その結果、私は自分の大好きな野球について英語で執筆することができています。日本語の資料を英語に翻訳したりなど、実際その道のりはとても大変です。また、そのクラスはオンラインで行われているため、友達などに相談する機会が少なく寂しく感じたりもします。ですが、英文学科の学生としての集大成を、英語での卒業論文という形で完成させられたら学生時代に後悔は残らない思い、日々執筆に励んでいます。英語で執筆することの不安や、英語は得意ではないけれど好きだから英文科に入学したという方もいらっしゃると思います。確かに、英語で執筆するということはとても難しい事ですが、同時に達成感も得られるのではないでしょうか。不安に思っている方も、優しいゼミの先生方と共に英語での卒業論文執筆を頑張ってください。
