My Experience of Studying in New York

When I was a second-year college student, I took a leave of absence from school and went to New York to study.
I went to a local language school and studied English with classmates whose ages, nationalities and cultures were all different. At school, most of the classes were discussion style which I rarely experienced in Japan. I realized how few opinions I had through those classes. Since then, I worked on participating in the discussions more actively because I learned that there was nothing wrong with having a unique opinion which is different from the majority.
On weekends, I visited toured art museums and went to see musicals. I led a fulfilling life there as I was surrounded by trendy fashion and arts that I love. However, I also encountered many homeless people, and this was shocking because I had never seen so many homeless people in my life. Since I saw them with my own eyes, I became interested in poverty in the USA, and I decided to study more about it.
Before studying abroad, I actually lost purpose of going to university. I thought that the department I entered was the best place that I belonged to because I could learn anything. However, because of a variety of choices of study, I couldn’t figure out what my focus could be. Thus, I decided to study abroad to discover myself and spent 6 months in New York. I was lucky that I was able to come back before covid-19 issues became more serious. Now back in Japan, I am carrying on my research about homeless in the USA.
