A Review of and Goals for My School Days
During my freshman and sophomore years at JWU, I focused on gaining many practical experiences in addition to my academic work. The two most memorable of these experiences were my participation in an internship with a ward assemblyman and a month-long language program in New York City.
During the summer vacation of my freshman year, I interned for a ward assembly member. This experience provided me with a valuable opportunity to learn about the policy-making process in the local community. Specifically, I accompanied the council member in his activities, listening to the council meetings and preparing documents, and was able to experience firsthand the actual policy-making process and the issues behind it. In addition, through the public relations activities of legislators, I realized the importance of communication in politics. Through this internship, I was able to deepen my understanding of local community issues.
In the spring of my sophomore year, I participated in a one-month language study program in New York. At school, I took classes in daily conversation and cross-cultural communication. Outside of class, I actively interacted with local people, such as my host family and their friends, and was able to dramatically improve my English communication skills. In addition, living in the multicultural city of New York provided an excellent opportunity to understand different cultures and values and to develop a flexible way of thinking. This experience not only broadened my international perspective, but also increased my awareness of my future career because I realized that English is important if I want to work for a company that has international reach.
Now, in my third year, I would like to focus on seminar activities and job hunting. I am particularly interested in the cultural backgrounds and social influences in American works of literature. In the seminar class, I would like to make use of the skills I have cultivated through the aforementioned internship and language training program, and I would like to speak up actively in seminar activities and do my best in researching for my graduation thesis. And in my job hunting activities, I would like to make use of the experience I gained from my internship to improve my hireability. In addition, I would like to improve my English language skills that I have acquired through language training and seminars, and I would like to continue learning English with the goal of achieving a high TOEIC score. I will do my best to balance my studies and job-hunting activities so that both receive the attention they require.
Based on the experience and skills I have gained in the first half of my university life; I would like to devote myself to further growth this year.
