ABRIDGED HISTORY OF JAPAN WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY

 

1896

Women's Education published by Jinzo Naruse. 

1901

Japan Women's University was founded.
Jinzo Naruse became its first president.
Numbers of admissions to the Department of Home Economics was 84, Japanese Literature 91, English Literature 10, and the Girls' High School 288.

1906

The Department of Education was established.
Homei Elementary School and Homei Kindergarten, affiliated with the University, were founded.
Sansenryo Dormitory was opened in Karuizawa.

1919

Jinzo Naruse gave his farewell lecture, recording the three educational principles of the University: "True Conviction", "Creativity", and "Cooperation and Service". Jinzo Naruse died on 4 March.

1921

The Department of Social Welfare was established.

1927

The Preparatory Course of the University was established.

1929

The Institute of Child Study was founded.

1930

The Regular Course of the University was established.

1934

The site for the Nishi-Ikuta Campus was purchased.

1947

The Middle School was started.

1948

Japan Women's University as a new university system was started.
The Faculties of Home Economics※1 and Literature※2 were established.

1949

The Department of Education in the Correspondence Course was established.

1952

The Rural Life Research Institute was established.

1961

The Graduate School of Home Economics※3 was established.

1964

The Women's Education Research Institute was established.

1966

The Graduate School of Literature※4 was established.

1968

The Computation Laboratory was established.

1990

The Faculty of Human Sociology※5 was established in Nishi-Ikuta.

1992

The Faculty of Science and the Graduate School of Human Life Science were established.

1994

The Graduate School of Human Sociology※6 was established.

1995

The General Research Institute was started.

1996

The Graduate School of Science was established.

2001

The 100th Anniversary of JWU was celebrated.

2006

The 100th Anniversary of Homei Elementary School and Home Kindergarten was celebrated.

2007

Graduate (Master's) courses were established in the Correspondence Course.
The Recurrent Education Program was established.

2008

The Research Institute for Women and Career was established.

2010

The Research and Development Center for Teacher Education was established.
