Supporting women’s education in Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, single-sex education is implemented from elementary school, and women wear a black veil called the abaya, which shows their eyes only. However, in all-women’s facilities, they are allowed to remove their veils, and express themselves normally.

At our university, we decided to accept women from Saudi Arabia in February 2005 under the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s initiative for women’s education. It is our firm hope that the experiences of these young women at Japan Women’s University will further educational cooperation and liaison with Saudi Arabia.
